Life - the one where Lily comes home

Lily the saluki

It's been a whirlwind of a week. I got back from a little trip back to Manchester on Thursday morning, and a few hours later we were on our way to pick up our new pup Lily from the rescue centre. Her settling in process has not been smooth. Bella is not overly happy about sharing her toys and Lily is still learning the meaning of personal space. There has been pee on the floor, there have been midnight dog walkies, there was a very intimidated pizza delivery guy. It's not been easy on any of us.

The addition of a new dog to the family has been more stressful than I'd imagined. I've been pretty much tied to the apartment and the outside seating at Starbucks since she arrived. That means I have to choose between being damn chilly and damn hot. Whichever I do I'm never wearing the right outfit. Make up and shaving have gone out of the window. I suddenly have a huge appreciation for what new mums go through - at least I don't need to add breast feeding to my problems.

There have been times where I've (very briefly) thought about just setting them both free, and then one of them looks in my eyes and I'm reminded how much joy they bring to our family. Such loyalty and affection can be overwhelming too.

It's the times that test us that show us what we can deal with. This week has been a test, but it's also shown me that my capacity to love is so much bigger than I ever thought possible. This family adventure is so exciting, I can overlook some pee on the tiles because I can't wait to see where it goes next.
